The fact that President Trump announced today that Bill Pulte, the head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, will also serve as Director of National Intelligence frankly stuns me.

The concern is not only that Mr. Pulte lacks the ‘extensive national security experience’ required by statute for the job, which was created after intelligence failures led to the deaths of thousands of Americans on 9/11.

It is that he appears to have been selected precisely because the White House believes he will provide the narrative it wants, not the intelligence we need.

For several weeks, my colleagues and I have been forcing votes in the Senate to ensure we have a real debate about whether it’s in our national interest to continue this war.

We urge HUD to immediately restore full funding eligibility for all pre-purchase, post-purchase, and delinquency counseling for borrowers with conventional and government-sponsored mortgages under this NOFO.

I simply suspended active campaigning. I am still on the ballot.

Americans have already seen Mr. Pulte use the powers of his office at the Federal Housing Finance Agency to pursue the president’s grievances and lend credibility to dubious prosecutions of President Trump’s perceived political opponents.

A moratorium is appropriate given the impacts of massive data centers in other states on the environment and on electricity rates.

That is how intelligence becomes politicized, how inconvenient facts disappear, how agencies charged with protecting our democracy instead become tools to manipulate it, and how Americans are left more vulnerable to a terrorist attack.

Constitutional rights are a shield against government overreach and misconduct; they are vital to any democracy, and especially to our own at this time.

Today is a historic and important milestone in our fight to make sure every Wisconsinite has access to clean and safe drinking water, whether they live in Marinette or Stella or on French Island or anywhere in between.

Finally, let’s keep bringing supply chains and jobs back home to Michigan by shoring up our economic development toolkit so anyone can ‘make it’ in Michigan.
