She served the people of Minnesota with grace, compassion, and tirelessness. Minnesota's thoughts are with her loved ones.

Today Minnesota lost a great leader. A formidable public servant and a fixture of the state Capitol, Melissa Hortman woke up every day determined to make our state a better place.

This has certainly been a very difficult time.

We can't take that back, but we can honor their memory by coming together and doing everything we can to help remaining people that may be out there and help rebuild in Ohio County.

This is a very challenging time for the residents of Ohio County.

Thank you to the thousands of protestors who exercised their constitutional rights in the right way tonight.

My heart is broken for everyone impacted tonight.

A deeply troubling act of violence that has no place in our public square.

I wish that he would have reached out and identified himself and let us know who he was and that he wanted to talk

The attack appears to be a politically motivated assassination.

This was an act of targeted political violence.

I will stand in the way of Tom Homan going after people who don’t deserve to be frightened in their communities.

Local law enforcement in Champlin and Brooklyn Park have the full resources of the State of Minnesota behind them. We are monitoring the situation closely and will share more information soon.

We are cautiously optimistic they will survive this assassination attempt.

Those responsible for this will be held accountable.

We must all, in Minnesota and across the country, stand against all forms of political violence.

Out of an abundance of caution my Department of Public Safety is recommending that people do not attend any political rallies today in Minnesota until the suspect is apprehended.

We don’t settle our differences with violence or at gunpoint.

Peaceful discourse is the foundation of our democracy.

We must stand united against all forms of violence – and I call on everyone to join me in that commitment.

We are not a country that settles our differences at gunpoint.

We are not going away.

He is not the same person that I dealt with just four years ago, and he's incapable of even a train of thought.

Protestors to remain peaceful and calm as they exercise their First Amendment right to make their voices heard.
