I look forward to working with Ranking Member Heller and other members of the Subcommittee to hold scammers and others who prey on consumers accountable.

You're telling me you don't have the tools to stop this right now; is that correct?

I want to welcome everyone today to the first subcommittee hearing in the Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, and Insurance and Athletics.

This subcommittee will use our hearings to serve as a watchdog for consumers, with particular focus on misleading and deceptive marketing to consumers.

I know that the industry takes issue with some of the figures used to highlight this problem and I'm interested to hear what they have to say.

What I want to get at is this free credit report problem that we thought we'd solved.

We're not talking about a local bank who you have a relationship with here. We're talking about nameless, faceless people that are dealing with numbers...

I think they are kind of spitting in the face of the intent of the legislation that was passed.

I truly believe that this economic opportunity is ours for the taking.

we need to work together in a bipartisan way to get comprehensive reform done.

It's getting late in the day. Anything is possible.

I think we all could be doing more to improve accuracy of credit reports.

If banks said: Oh, guess what, 2 percent of our customers have less money than they thought they had, that would be a big scandal.

When they do it, we want them to do it in the United States of America.

I've actually heard a trail of tears in my state about this problem.

I always find it ironic that we have unlimited visas for sports players... but in fact we have our limits on scientists and engineers

We are a country of immigrants, and we have to remember that every single day.
