I must commend you, I must commend Ms. Schwartz, and those people who have put some proposals on the table.

I strongly believe that we need to do something about income inequality in this country.

Continued underinvestment in transportation infrastructure will only hamper economic growth.

I am a big believer in our nation's public transit systems and support robust federal investment in their growth.

However, for a decade, I served as a member of the House Transportation Committee.

We certainly pay our fair share of taxes in the state of New Jersey.

A long-term solution to the revenue challenges facing the HTF would boost the economy while also reducing the deficit.

But the point of the matter is this is one nation. We are not talking about alcoves, we are talking about one nation of 50 states.

But it needs to be repaired. It needs to be maintained.

Federal investment in transportation infrastructure plays an essential role in protecting public health and safety, promoting commerce, and keeping America competitive.

So you started a down payment on this, and recommending what you recommended.

And there is no doubt, Mr. Secretary, that if we did not have that money voted upon in February 2009, we would have been in a worse place.

When was the last time we had a balanced budget in this country, Mr. Lew?

I have seen the help now as compared to the help 5 or 6 years ago with our servicemembers, and it was a catastrophe in the beginning.

I am well aware of the advances we have made in research on the brain in recent years. It is pretty fantastic.

I think that the president should be applauded for his proposals to not only invest in science, but his proposal to make sure that we reward those corporations and companies who want to bring jobs back to the United States of America.

But senior inflation is very different than inflation for you.

But why in God's name would we lead this budget in determining that we are going to cut benefits in order to reduce this deficit?

Cutting the benefits our seniors rely on is not how we should balance our budget, or try to balance the budget.

It is a cut in benefits.
