“I rise in support of the Weldon amendment to increase funding for the Firefighters Assistance Grant Program. There are a million firefighters in America, one million, and 32,000 fire departments. The number of applications for the first year is just overwhelming. This is a replica of the COPS program, which proved to be so successful. The amount of applications is an indication, Mr. Chairman, of how serious the need is in our Nation's fire departments. I totally support this amendment. We are all going to be hearing from the fire departments in our own districts, because there is only so much money to go around for so many applications.”
