I am grateful to the President and the Secretary for their confidence and their trust in nominating me to serve as Ambassador to Libya.

I have worked over the years to try to help that poor nation of Haiti with many, many issues, including poverty and water and the devastating deforestation.

A peaceful and democratic Libya is important for regional stability.

The relationship between our two countries is going to need continued work in the challenging years ahead, and I believe Ambassador Brewster will be the right person for that job.

I would continue to support those efforts.

The President has wisely chosen an individual of great experience, expertise, and commitment.

democratic transitions are notoriously difficult, and political progress is organic, not linear.

We're going to look at making sure you don't even get your hands on them at all so that we don't get in this kind of situation.

There's no question that the sequester, where we run the risk of removing the fuels removal budget to go into suppression, is not the best way to operate our public lands.

I applaud the President and your Department for making full funding of the 10-year suppression average a priority.

This really is a program about saving lives, good will for the United States.

Shouldn't we have a policy in place that finally addresses this issue?

I was here in 1986. I supported Ronald Reagan's immigration policy. At the time, we had 3 million illegals.

I don't think there is any difference here, I would think, or even in the Congress, relative to the importance of immigration to this country.

It did not do the job. How do we know 10 years from now, 5 years from now, that we won't be faced with say 23 million illegal immigrants?

What this legislation that the Senate has put together begins to do is deal with that third part.

If they are serious and they want to be a part of the organization, they're going to have to reform many of the policies that are required.
