For all time, they are what we can only aspire to be: giving, unselfish, the epitome of human love—to lay down one's life so that others might live.

Freedom itself they cannot have.

That amount represents back pay, mustering-out pay, and interest.

Mr. Graham is a veteran of Navy and Marine Corps service who has honorably served his country.

Those who believe human beings are free until they step into the marketplace are mistaken.

and for mustering-out pay with respect to his separation from service on April 5, 1943.

Let us pause in solemn and prayerful remembrance of these fallen heroes and of all firefighters who have given their lives through the years.

I have today approved H.R. 610, 'An Act for the relief of Calvin L. Graham.'

Section 2(b) of the Act provides that the payment of the $4,916.99 shall be in full satisfaction of any claim against the United States that Mr. Graham may have for basic pay for the period from September 17, 1942, through April 5, 1943.

Section 1 also provides for reimbursement of Mr. Graham for costs he incurred for the treatment of those injuries.

Section 2 of the Act provides for a total lump-sum payment of $4,916.99 to Mr. Graham.

Saul Bellow's Mr. Sammler says it best: 'For that is the truth of it: that we all know, God, that we know, that we know, we know, we know.'

I have set before you life and death. Therefore choose life.

Section I of the Act provides that, for purposes of service-connected disability compensation, the dental injuries that Mr. Graham incurred in the Battle of Guadalcanal will be considered to be a permanent service-connected disability…

We cannot be content with our own freedom.

The best a human being can hope to achieve is to make himself or herself an example to clear a path to righteousness that others may follow.
