As we debate increasing the debt ceiling this afternoon, I think a bit of history is important as we acknowledge the current fiscal situation.

This debt is about the past, not about the future.

I don't understand how anyone who voted for the Iraq war could now vote against raising the debt ceiling.

What are the strategies afoot with your office to encourage some of our market priority countries, such as Brazil, to join these negotiations?

I think that is a considerable issue for this committee.

As you know the full committee is on the floor currently debating the TANF legislation.

We need to extend the child tax credit and the earned income tax credit, and that's what we should be doing today for middle income Americans and provide them with some sense of security and support. And, my God, can we do any more to help…

In the State of Massachusetts, 64 percent of the voters are either Republicans or Independents; and the health care plan in Massachusetts polls north of 70 percent in terms of customer satisfaction.

In my district, we had an uncompensated care cost of $50 million last year, and I am told that that, that works out to be about $1,000 per person who buys insurance that they have to pay more.

The earned income tax credit is the best anti-poverty program, the best pro-family, the best job creation measure to come out of Congress.

I think you hit some very important points, job training---- Health care. Transportation.

I think the Prime Minister probably discovered that the health care system in the U.K. was pretty popular.

One of the reasons that data suggests that the Welfare Reform Act of 1996 here worked was in some measure because we added a number of mitigating issues to the overall package, including job training, childcare, and not to miss the point…

I hope this Committee will be taking up jobs legislation, because you very saliently point out that jobs are at stake in this legislation.

I hope that this remains a priority because it is a difficult issue, as you might expect, going forward.
