Gary Gensler is the current Chair of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), having been appointed by President Joe Biden in April 2021. A member of the Democratic Party, Gensler has a background in finance and public service, previously serving as the Chair of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) from 2009 to 2014. He is known for his focus on financial regulation and consumer protection, emphasizing the importance of transparency and fairness in the financial markets. Gensler has also been a professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management, where he taught courses on blockchain technology and digital currencies.

I had the honor of working on the Senate Committee for Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs under the leadership of Senator Paul Sarbanes, a great public servant we recently lost.
I think that it is about investors making a choice as to what is significant or what is material.
That means strengthening transparency and accountability in our markets, so people can invest with confidence, and be protected from fraud and manipulation.
And above all, it means making sure our markets serve the needs of working families.
It is important to look at economically and look at whether retail investors are getting best execution.
What we have found is materiality is defined as what reasonable investors are seeking to have to make their decisions either to invest or not to invest or to vote yes or vote no.

I think that it does bring efficiency to many pension to have proxy advisers. It's a service that helps pension funds and investors through the proxy season.
It means promoting efficiency and competition, so our markets operate with lower costs to companies and higher returns to investors.
I think then the SEC has a role to play to help bring some consistency and comparability to those guidelines.

Some of the newer risks, or even involving what we talked about earlier, crypto, there is some interest in funds, investing in the digital asset and crypto space.
The crypto movement... is putting some competition on central banks around the globe.
Some of that concentration is because it is the large exchanges, the crypto-exchanges, like Coin Base has 20 million accounts.
the CFTC needs to have additional authorities about that underlying what I would call cash crypto-market, it is 70 percent of the market.
