One of the greatest things I've been proud of is Ronald Reagan's making human rights and democracy a major, major part of his administration's goals.

Well, it seems to me that we have to be much more diligent on--in that area and--if--unless we have accountability and responsibility for these things, we can expect to have more problems.

Well, what about the next program? Can a company that did not meet its contract be denied the next contract or a contract down the road because they have not met their obligation?

That's a reflection on the fact that we aren't doing our job here as well.

We need to make sure we hold NASA accountable, but I have to assume that the Congress isn't doing its job all that well either.

I am sure there are people who are alive today because--and living peacefully today because of the great endeavors that you have made in this committee.

I believe--I vote the actually substance of that act of holding people accountable.

We say we are going to get you. We are coming for you.

There are no greater champions of freedom that I know than Vietnamese Americans who have suffered tyranny...

To the heroes we say you are not forgotten.

I believe a primary responsibility of government, especially the Federal Government, is to make sure that they protect the safety of the American people.

Do you think that our current nuclear power plants can withstand a 7.5 earthquake and not leak radioactivity?

I personally have been disturbed that we have not developed the next generation of nuclear power.

However, if that happens to go down, we are talking about millions of people being irradiated.

I have been very concerned that we have nuclear energy facilities that, in an earthquake--I mean, look at what happened in Japan.

So this Ring of Fire that we are talking about, does that mean that all the countries that are around that edge of the Pacific are at the maximum risk in the world of having quakes?

How do we compare in terms of the danger that we face as compared to other countries?

There is a serious threat that large numbers of people in our population could be in great danger.

We are spending already a trillion dollars a year more than we are taking in.

I think one of the primary responsibilities of government, especially the Federal Government in this case, is to make sure that we are prepared for major threats to the overall safety and well-being of the country and the American people.

Our efforts should be, instead of providing warning, we should focus on what comes next to make sure that, number one, beforehand we are prepared; number two, what do we do after the earthquake has come to mitigate that.

We end up predicting an earthquake to say within the next five days there will be an earthquake, so they come back on the 6th day, and then you have the earthquake on the 10th day.

This is a very serious issue today. This is very serious because we know that this potential dangerous situation is hanging right there.

I will be working with my Science Committee colleagues to introduce a bill in the House very soon for this reauthorization.

We must ensure it is effective and up-to-date with the latest knowledge and science for monitoring and mitigation of earthquakes.
