I do appreciate this hearing being held on the Department of Energy's efforts to mitigate the environmental impacts of fossil fuels used in the power sector, as well as in manufacturing processes.

It is also an issue of our economic and national security.

This is a moral issue, one that demands action to ensure women have equal access to their career of choice.

I am pleased that the Chairwoman is holding this hearing today, as it allows us to examine the current priorities and issues within the trucking industry in our nation.

To reach this goal, we must do more to ensure that all researchers have access to a safe work environment.

I commend the National Science Foundation (NSF) for starting this conversation among agencies and taking the first bold step with their new reporting requirement.

What can be done through Congress and through our funding agencies is to set certain expectations for how grant-receiving institutions must create these opportunities for changing the paradigm.

I commend our universities, we commend the leadership that they take in terms of listening and engaging the students.

Earlier this year I was joined by my good friend, Ranking Member Lucas, in introducing H.R. 36, the Combating Sexual Harassment in Science Act.

I think it's concerning that we might end up yielding leadership in an area where--you know, dark energy is something that was discovered by American scientists.

This isn't a new tactic. The George W. Bush Administration, which initiated the last Moon program, tried the same approach.

That's why it perplexes me as to why the Administration would even consider raiding Science to pay for a Moon program.

I hope that the U.S. continues our investment in Earth science so that we can remain a global leader.

Starving science to fund human exploration is not the answer.

I think it's important that we maintain our leadership in science and technology.

The oceans are such a vital part of our national economy and livelihoods...

In order to be global leaders, we must first understand the state and importance of ocean exploration...

We have seen our federal investments in research and development lead to great advances in science and technology...

I am glad to see our Committee so engaged in World Oceans Month and Capitol Hill Ocean Week...

But, despite the emergence of new cutting-edge and cost-effective ocean exploration technologies, we are ceding ground to other countries.
