I am asking my friends, my colleagues, and those who are within the sound of my voice, please, let's do what we can to protect ourselves and others. I beg that we would please wear the face mask. Let us wash our hands. Let us maintain the distancing. I know that it won't happen all of the time. We can have a memory lapse. We might just rush out of the house and not have our mask on. But let's not, with intentionality, leave home without it. Let's not, with intentionality, mix and mingle with the persons around us without a mask on. Let us, with intentionality, do all that we can to protect ourselves and others. This virus is not relenting at this time. It is relentless. I rise today to address the question of life and death, the question associated with the Governor of the State of Texas indicating that on tomorrow people may go out into the public and to public venues without a mask. He is leaving it to the public to make decisions associated with life and death. Life and death in Texas because the 7-day average for hospitalizations is 6,000. The number of people that died on last Sunday was 65. Life and death. And he leaves it in the hands of people who may somehow believe that he is risking his life. Not so. Not to the extent that the public will be, those who haven't been vaccinated because on December 22 of last year the Governor was vaccinated. The Governor has resources. If by chance he should contract the virus, the Governor will have access to the finest medical care in the world. The Governor will get to the hospital expeditiously either by some car that will have some officer driving at a high rate of speed because the road will be cleared for him or he will pursue his needs by way of helicopter. The Governor has resources. Better example. The former President, who called the virus a hoax, when he contracted the virus, he went to the finest medical center, received the finest medical care, and he survived. - And still I rise. And still I rise because I love my country. And today I rise to defend those who are recipients of the DACA program. I rise to defend these young people because, unfortunately, bigotry is being weaponized against them. I rise because the Chief Executive Officer has indicated that there are hardened criminals among them, but he does it in such a way as to demean and defame all of them. He does it on the day that the Supreme Court of the United States of America is considering a case with reference to DACA recipients. I rise to defend them. These are young people who came to this country at a very early age. They did not come of their own volition. These are young people who have been screened and vetted. These are young people who have gone on to get good educations. These are young people who are contributing to our society. So I rise to defend the DACA recipients. I rise because I understand what is going on. This Chief Executive Officer is not going to stop. This is just another phase of his attempts to weaponize bigotry, hatred, racism. He did it with the Muslim ban, weaponizing religion. He did it with the s-hole countries, weaponizing race. He did it with some ``fine people'' among those in Charlottesville where a woman lost her life, weaponizing anti-Semitism. And he has done it repeatedly and will not stop. - And still I rise, Mr. Speaker, because I love my country. I rise today to address the trial that will start in the Senate, the trial to impeach the President of the United States of America. This trial, Mr. Speaker, will not end until the last person has testified. In a sense it is like an opera, and, as you know, Mr. Speaker, the opera isn't over until there is a song that is sung; and until the last witness sings, the opera isn't over, this political opera as it were. There are witnesses who must be heard. I believe that there are 51 Senators who will find agreement with what I have said. I believe that there are Senators who understand that when they take that oath, they have to step outside of the normal rhetoric that they may have espoused. I think they have to stand on the Constitution, and I think the Constitution requires them to hear all of the relevant and material evidence. There are documents that should be heard. There are witnesses that must be heard. I believe that the Senators will vote such that documents and witnesses that have not been produced will be produced and the witnesses will be heard. I believe that this is one of the seminal moments in time for the Members of the Senate, and I think they will understand that this is not just about this time, it is about all time. I am most feared because the President recently tweeted that he would have me removed from Congress because I have indicated that I would bring Articles of Impeachment. This is a President who has caused us to understand that the norms of society mean very little to him. This is a President who seems to think that he can rule by executive order. However, Mr. Speaker, I would have you and all who can hear this and see what I am saying to know that the day of decision is near. I believe that, as a person who is armed with the ax of truth and not afraid to slam it into the tree of circumstance and let the chips fall wherever they may, I believe that as such a person, I am duty-bound to bring Articles of Impeachment to the floor of the House of Representatives. I will do so because I believe what I said before he was elected this time. I believe what I said then, and I believe it now. This President is a threat to our democracy. He has done things that would cause us to conclude, those of us who have observed closely, that he disrespects the Constitution. He took an oath to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution. I rise, Mr. Speaker, as the only Member of Congress ever to be evicted during a joint session of Congress. I have been censured, Mr. Speaker, but I have not been silenced. Still I rise today to call to our attention some history associated with the Voting Rights Act and to bring to our attention how this Voting Rights Act has had a positive impact on our Nation, on this Congress, and, I would say, indirectly on the entire planet Earth. A very important aspect of this Voting Rights Act is section 2. Section 2 had its genesis, as is the case with the Voting Rights Act of 1965, with Bloody Sunday. Bloody Sunday occurred in March 1965 at the Edmund Pettus Bridge. One of our Members, John Lewis, was there. In fact, he was a leader of this march on Bloody Sunday. As such, he informed us--I talked to him on more than one occasion about it--how they started the march at a church, how they approached the Edmund Pettus Bridge, and how, on approach to the Edmund Pettus Bridge, they could see the bridge itself. As they got more along the way, they could see that there were persons waiting for them. Some of these persons were on horseback. Others were not, but they were armed.
