Both these bills contain very important and complementary measures designed to increase the profile of and counter one of the most important human rights issues of the present day.

Yesterday it passed by an overwhelming majority and cleansed a stain on this government and this Congress for failing to recognize the first genocide of the 20th century.

I want to join the ranking member in taking a minute to recognize that we recognized the Armenian Genocide yesterday.

To ensure that this murderous ideology of ISIS does not resurrect from the ashes of Syria and Iran will require an enduring American commitment.

U.S. engagement and commitment to the Middle East is necessary. It is definitely preferred to a Middle East in which rogue regimes like Russia, Iran, or China are power brokers.

I am going to continue to urge my colleagues to hold those responsible for war crimes in Syria accountable.

And I am grateful that we have bipartisan legislation on this point.

To be fair, the Trump Administration has presided over many important successes in the Middle East.

We do not want taxpayer dollars going to prop up Assad.

And then we are also equally grateful for our Irish heritage.

I believe, indeed, the Irish people have overcome many obstacles in the past and can do that in the future.
