A statement from Checks and Balances on President Trump's abuse of office for the record submitted by the Honorable Sheila Jackson Lee, a Representative in Congress from Texas.

Over 70 percent of the American people believe, as I said, what the President did was wrong.

The phone call itself of July 25 is extraordinarily clear, to my mind, in that we hear the President asking for a favor that's clearly of personal benefit.

The Constitution says there can be no titles of nobility.

If what we are talking about today is not impeachable, then nothing is impeachable.

If we are going to have this management issue back and forth, we are really not achieving the underlying goal of this whole project.

The goal of Congress in establishing the EHRM programs was to establish one single record that follows servicemembers as they enlist in the military, perform their service, transition, and then for the rest of their lives.

If a patient needs to go to both, the VA and DOD, to get their complete record, we are not establishing--we are not meeting the goal of the system.

I want to turn now to a different issue that concerns.

I am also a big proponent of accountability and not throwing a ton of money at problems and, you know, throwing everything and the kitchen sink and then not really having any accountability.

DHS is providing asylum seekers with incomplete or inaccurate paperwork

The Remain-in-Mexico and the port courts are the latest legally questionable step in the Trump administration's anti-immigrant agenda.

I have stated early on that this is a country of immigrants and a country of laws.

I am introducing something called the failsafe elections bill that deals with paper ballots and other issues.

This is not going to happen overnight. It is going to happen with consistent investment over time.

I have seen superior [sic] and consistent Secretaries of Homeland Security.

Let me say how serious this hearing is. Probably to ensure that democracy thrives, we probably need to have these meetings almost every other day.

State and local election authorities--with help from the Federal Government--must invest in IT departments, train their employees, and upgrade and certify their election equipment.

Congress has yet to send a single piece of comprehensive election security legislation to the President's desk.

Have we done enough to secure the 2020 elections from our adversaries?

I count that as a crisis. That is about one-third of the 50 States that don't have paper ballots, that something disruptive could occur and they have no record.
