I would like to thank Chairman Harkin and Ranking Member Alexander for calling this hearing today to address one of the most serious issues facing the higher education community: campus sexual assault.

You can't really call yourself a university or college if you're allowing this problem to persist.

I'm glad that we made great progress when we reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act.

Implementing the Campus SaVE Act is one of my top priorities, and I believe that the law will lead to significant improvement in how colleges and universities prevent and respond to cases of sexual violence, dating violence and stalking.

Too many survivors of sexual assault have suffered in silence, or been silenced when they have attempted to speak out, and it is fitting that we are giving them a voice and shedding light on this issue.

We should react with a sense of outrage. This is the ultimate betrayal of a woman who attends college.

There should be zero tolerance, and that means the institutions should be doing a lot of things already without any laws.

This problem has persisted now for generations, and we're finally getting to the point where we're reacting appropriately to it.

We know that aggressive trade enforcement is critical to maintaining a level playing field for all of our companies.

Too often we find ourselves on the defense.

Without action, we stand to lose half a million jobs in this country, over 35,000 in Pennsylvania alone.

We have our own major shale play in Pennsylvania that is now making meaningful contributions to our Nation's natural gas supply.

One of the great benefits of natural gas extraction and the impact it is having on the economy of my home State of Pennsylvania, as well as the Nation, is the benefit it provides to our manufacturing sector.
