It is clearly time to end all new Federal coal leasing on public lands and invest in domestic renewable energy production.
Not only when these companies go bankrupt do they strip workers of their benefits, workers don't get health care, they don't get pensions.
How could the Federal coal program be improved to make sure that mines are quickly and fully reclaimed in the industry?
When these coal companies go bankrupt, they shed their liabilities for health care and pensions.
According to their 2022 annual report, Warrior Met made over $641 million in profit last year.
These workers had personally sacrificed to keep the mine running when the previous owner, Walter Energy, went bankrupt in 2016.

I do hope to work with my colleagues across the aisle to make sure we potentially address any potential loopholes around reclamation.
I do believe this is a positive step toward addressing coal mining's harmful legacy that will build on funds appropriated through the Infrastructure Investments and Jobs Act to clean up and reclaim abandoned mine lands.
I agree that the workforce must be qualified and empowered to create a safer, more sustainable industry.
