I believe the difficulty today is in developing a spoken prayer that recognizes the diversity of religious beliefs in this country and is constitutional. In the past, we have debated the issue of a moment of silence in which students can pray. In addition, there is nothing to prohibit one's offering a silent prayer in the classroom. From the number of hours and years I have spent in and out of classrooms when my own children were going through school, I believe it is important to start the day with a moment of silence. I think that everyone can pause and reflect on those things that are meaningful to them in their lives.
