I have pledged not to change Social Security and Medicare benefits for those at or near retirement.

That has to be one of our core priorities. Because without it, nothing else matters at this point.

We can no longer ignore our unsustainable spending levels.

I must reaffirm my position to the Budget Committee that my constituents and I cannot and will not support any proposal that cuts the benefits of those at or near retirement.

We cannot default on that promise.

It is about allowing those of us who don't view this institution as a career and don't think we should get a pension for serving our country.
