Richard Milhous Nixon was the 37th President of the United States, serving from January 20, 1969, until his resignation on August 9, 1974. A member of the Republican Party, he previously held the office of Vice President under Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1953 to 1961. Nixon's presidency is noted for significant foreign policy achievements, including the historic opening of relations with China and the policy of détente with the Soviet Union. Domestically, he is recognized for establishing the Environmental Protection Agency and implementing various social programs.
We can be proud of the fact that in four wars in this century the United States has fought only to defend freedom, never to destroy it; only to keep the peace, never to break it.
The day the United States becomes the second strongest nation in the world, peace and freedom will be in deadly jeopardy everywhere in the world.
We have reduced our total military, manpower by nearly one-third from the 1968 level.
The United States is the only nation ever to become the most powerful in the world without seeking to.
The result would be to leave America with the second strongest army, the second strongest navy, the second strongest air force in the world.
That is why I asked the Congress to place a $250 billion ceiling on Federal spending in the current fiscal year--which it refused to do.
Most important of all, we want you to know that as we go through this campaign that we are glad we are here at a time that we have made a very significant breakthrough in bringing peace in Vietnam and building peace in the world.
We will not be satisfied until all our city streets are safe, until we have a system of courts that is once more capable of dispensing swift, fair justice to criminal and victim alike.
This is why I proposed to the Congress in February of 1 971 the national land use policy act--a bill which would help the States establish management programs for a wide range of areas which are of critical environmental concern.
This law is closely modeled on the recommendations I submitted to the Congress in February of 1971.
I believe that the Government in Washington is taking too much money out of your pocket.
