Herbert Clark Hoover was the 31st President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1929, to March 4, 1933. A member of the Republican Party, Hoover was born in Iowa but later moved to California. Before his presidency, he served as the Secretary of Commerce from 1921 to 1928, where he focused on promoting economic growth and efficiency. Hoover was also known for his humanitarian efforts during World War I, leading relief efforts in Europe and earning a reputation as a skilled administrator.
If we judge it by the standard of battles in which the contrary result would have essentially varied the whole course of history, then it becomes one of the very few decisive battles in the history of the world.
No one steps upon the soil of Virginia without inspiration from the part she has played in the winning of our liberties and the building of our institutions.
It is not too much to say that without Washington the war for independence would not have been won.
No American can review this vast pageant of progress without confidence and faith, without courage, strength, and resolution for the future.
In hard times we must open our hearts and consider our neighbors and brothers.
We thank you not alone for fine courtesy but for the inspiration which comes from Virginia.
MR. EDISON was as great in his brave fight for life as he was in the achievements which have made the whole world his debtor.
On behalf of the nation I express the profound sympathy of all our people and Mrs. Hoover and I personally extend our deepest sympathy to you and your son and daughter in your irreparable loss.
He multiplied light and dissolved darkness; he added to whole wealth of nations.
That distinction came abundantly to Thomas Alva Edison whose death in his 85th year has ended a life of courage and outstanding achievement.
