We should be clear about who Charlie Kirk was. His rhetoric and beliefs were ignorant, uneducated and sought to disenfranchise millions of Americans.

When we were in the majority for four years, there was not a shutdown. Not one. Why? Because we did what you're supposed to do: talk in a bipartisan negotiation and each side has input.

The resolution is very down the middle and straightforward.

Republicans will own a government shutdown. Period. Full stop.

By refusing to work with Democrats, Republicans are steering our country straight toward a shutdown.

We have to recommit ourselves to saving these children. We’re seeing it every day. Younger and younger people are participating in these acts. This is a real wake-up call for our city, for our country.

This was a failure of a society that allows 16-year-olds to get so close to shooting up a school and potentially killing classmates and teachers.

This is what cooperation looks like.
