Protecting SNAP and preventing fraud is not a Republican or a Democratic issue, though. I think everyone agrees on that.

From my point of view, you know, we are living in the richest country in the world, and our level of childhood poverty is criminal.

To see people who blew up this deficit so that the wealthiest people in America could have tax cuts... that makes no sense to me.

We reduced hunger in the United States by 30 percent, and we did not add a single bureaucrat to the Federal Government to do it.

The idea that we would be threatening to blow up our credit rating over the school lunch program or over SNAP does not make any sense to me.

I believe we can solve hunger. I believe that we can take what works, and we have seen a lot of things that are working across the country.

Each and every one of those people are Americans, and they should have the same access to vital programs.

We are facing, in this country, also, not just a hunger crisis but a nutrition crisis.

It is outrageous that people who have drug convictions cannot get SNAP.

SNAP is great. It needs to become a nutrition program.

Food banks are really critical for the support and foundation of SNAP.

The Emergency Food Assistance Program, or TEFAP, was established to provide emergency food assistance to low-income individuals.

I am concerned about proposals to limit this.

I also plan to introduce legislation, the HAND UP Act, that will ensure SNAP is implemented in a way that measurably improves the employment outcomes of able-bodied Americans.

I look forward to working with Chairman Fetterman to find bipartisan solutions.

I think whenever we entertain any of this we have got to make sure that we are getting value out of whatever we are proposing.

This work requirement has been in place since 1996, and was passed with bipartisan support, including that of Senator Joe Biden.

I share that view and I hope others do so that we can move it rapidly through and not get hung up.

This is a legacy which we can all be proud of. I urge my colleagues to join me in working to reauthorize PEPFAR without delay and without new mandates and directives.

I believe support for PEPFAR remains strong because its success is measured in lives saved, and we have saved millions of lives.
