Our country's growing debt and underperforming economy should be front and center in these conversations.

This is a list of suggestions from the President, but we are the ones that actually do the budget.

We should not be talking about cutting pensions. We should be talking about a program to guarantee that when people retire they can live in dignity.

It is often said that the longer we wait to reform Social Security, the more difficult it will be.

Part of the deficit problem that we have will be when one-third of the Federal work force retires and expects their pensions.

And the longer we wait, the less likely we are to be able to make that promise.

I have tried to keep from cutting Social Security benefits since I first got here.
