“Food safety is an issue that affects us all. It is not a partisan issue. We all want the safest food supply possible. It is, instead, our shared goal, a goal that requires cooperation and teamwork through a complicated process, and we have had that. For many of us, the safety and reliability of our food system is something we all too often take for granted. Day by day, we consume our favorite beverages, enjoy a quick snack, or sit down to a meal at a local restaurant. We rely on a system of checks and balances that takes place behind the scenes that we are often unaware of until something goes wrong. Then and only then do we realize how dependent we are on the food safety system that is supported by the activities carried out by the Federal, State, and local government agencies, as well as by the food industry itself. Together, they inspect, test, research, and monitor our food supply from the farm or ranch where it is produced to the family dinner table where it is consumed.”
