The goal of the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) at EPA is to provide information to the American people about the risks associated with exposure to certain chemicals.

Recent reports have documented several issues with the international organization's management which must be addressed if this project is to succeed.

But managing the dynamics of multiple countries working together toward a common goal, especially one as complex as this, is rarely easy.

However, it is highly unlikely that a research project of this size can be achieved by one institution, lab, company, or, in this fiscal environment, even by a single country.

Nuclear fusion has the potential to provide the world with a clean, safe, and practically inexhaustible source of energy.

Thank you, Chairman Smith for holding today's hearing to examine the rule proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency...

We cannot shut the door to our future

The National Academies has provided the nation with an important 'wake-up call.'

Simply put, NASA is about the future.

Business as usual is not a sustainable approach.

We can choose to continue to argue about which President or who in Congress is to blame for the current state of our human space exploration program.

I strongly believe we do not have that luxury if we want to maintain meaningful human space exploration capability in this nation.

We are not going to have a human space exploration program worthy of this great nation if we continue down the current path.

I consider National Aeronautics and Space Administration to be a critical national asset.

Civil R&D requires openness, collaboration, and sharing of results to be successful.

As a longtime supporter of public transportation... I am also interested in hearing about the Department's innovative transit research.

The ideas that our witnesses will share today... have the potential to help reduce American's commute times, reduce accidents on our highways and railroads, and reduce emissions.

Continuing investments in transportation research and development will be critical to the future viability of this thriving city and the cities across the nation.

Our economy depends on our ability to move people and goods efficiently from one point to another.

Good morning, I would like to thank the Chairman for holding today's hearing to examine the impact of research and technology on the future of transportation.

I am interested in hearing from our witnesses about ideas for streamlining and harmonizing some of these reporting requirements.

However, it is also clear that in order for our country to remain a leader in research, we need our researchers conducting research--not spending excessive amounts of time on paperwork.

It is clear that we must ensure full accountability for all federal funding.

Without a strong EHS research program on nanotechnology, we will be left with uncertainties surrounding potential risks for people and environments.

I applaud the current Administration's increased emphasis on EHS.
