I simply say, let us not be pennywise and pound-foolish when it comes to security.

Let us not forget that when you are in the air, when there are no air marshals on board, it is the flight crew that is the very last line of defense.

Let me be very clear: The airlines need to pay for flight attendant security training, and it needs to be part of their compensation package.

Our work is not done, and to the witnesses, our work is not done.

We simply cannot forget the lessons learned from the past as we look to preventing future terrorist attacks.

When we talk about security, we are really talking about people.

I think that is important to--I mean, I think in your discussions with airlines, your discussion with the traveling public, you have videos that you put into airports.

I hope everyone appreciates it.

We are paying for pillows, blankets, hot dogs, potato chips, drinks, and baggage.

I think it is worthy of a review. I am certainly interested in legislation.

I think America is safer now than it has ever been.

We live in a tough, tough time. I don't believe that you have been before this committee since the miraculous but also instructive taking down of Osama bin Laden.

I might mention to my Chairman that I have introduced H.R. 1900, the Surface Transportation and Mass Transit Security Act.

We have got to get our act together. We have got to synergize, integrate the oversight of Homeland Security with all the other agencies that are doing so.

Let's deter and stop the unlawful exportation of guns and ammunition.

I respectfully suggest that we control our borders OUTBOUND through steady-state port of exit inspections, similar to port of entry inspections.

I realize that these suggestions place our right to bear arms front and center. I do not wish to trample on that. However, I believe that our right to bear arms is not a right to arm a WAR in a foreign country.

Those ports of exit are our last line of defense.

I respectfully suggest that we study, propose, and pass legislation that more tightly controls the sale, resale, purchase, multiple purchases, possession, and transportation of weapons and ammunitions.

This is a gun-running country, unfortunately. A lot of it passes through my own city of Houston, and that is fueling the fire of drug cartels and violence with guns.

I have to make a statement of my absolute opposition to the line of legislation that has been passed in Arizona.

I was looking for my nameplate to be placed here for the appropriate protocol.

Can we close the gun show loopholes that seem to allow drugs to pass back and forth? That would be helpful to you as well.

I could not be in a Homeland Security hearing without expressing, again, my appreciation to all of the National security team, including our United States military and the President of the United States, for a historic effort that resulted…

My point is modernization has a positive premise. We have to delineate responsibilities.
