There is no basis for circumventing the appropriations process with a declaration of national emergency on the southern border.

Illegal border crossings are at nearly 40-year lows. There is no documented terrorist or national-security emergency at the southern border.

I, too, echo my colleagues' sentiments about diversity being our strength. And it is not just a pretty sentiment.

This utter lack of preparation is indefensible on its own, but it is particularly appalling...

Not only was the family separation policy abhorrent, the administration was either incompetent or grossly negligent in its implementation.

This administration is responsible for the harm suffered by thousands of children and their parents, and it must be held accountable.

When a stranger rips a child from a parent's arms without any plan to reunify them, it is called kidnapping.

We as a nation can and must do better.

As a mother and grandmother, my heart aches for all of them. As a member of this committee, I have a duty to get to the bottom of what happened, and I intend to do that.
