Today, House Republicans passed yet another budget that puts the American people last.

People know this is a failed presidency, and a failed Republican majority.

Over the last 18 months, we have seen where Republicans’ priorities are: trillions of dollars in tax cuts for billionaires, tens of billions of dollars for war and absolutely nothing for the American people.

I truly fear for our health systems, particularly in rural areas as well as urban areas. They will not be able to withstand the full amount of these cuts once the bill is finally phased in.

This bill truly was Robin Hood in reverse: it is robbing from the poor, taking away their healthcare (and) their food assistance in order to give money to the ultra and mega wealthy.

At its essence, you have the largest tax cuts for billionaires in American history, over $5 trillions worth paid for by the deepest cuts to healthcare and food assistance in American history.

The 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence were signing their death forms. After all, they knew what they faced had they not succeeded.

Part of me as a Philadelphian wants to say a Philly cheesesteak. But that would not age well over 250 years.

I do think our founders would be surprised and alarmed that this current Congress has not jealously guarded its prerogatives as the legislative branch, not just in the last two years but over the last 25 years.

Ninety-nine percent of the time, when we do things [in Congress], it is of a partisan nature … so besides the history of it, I hope that after this, the spirit of this event will live on.

I feel awe and I feel pride. And I also feel a certain burden to live up to what those Founders intended 250 years ago.

Our Founders would be surprised and alarmed that this current Congress has not jealously guarded its prerogatives.

From the most conservative Republican to the most progressive Democrat, to return to the room where it all began and remind ourselves that we are the inheritors of this great tradition.

But this is an opportunity to be part of something that’s above yourself, that truly will be special and historic.

I’m nervous. Let’s just say that right now, at the moment, I am very much a fan of Mike Johnson keeping the House in session through Thursday morning, so that way our plans for Independence Hall on July 2 aren’t negatively impacted.

I hope that after this, the spirit of this event will live on.

This is going to be truly one of the highlights of my tenure in Congress, to be sitting there where our Founding Fathers sat exactly 250 years prior, to the exact day.

I am very proud and excited this historic and special event is happening. It will be a unifying moment for the Congress and our country, at a time when we need it most.

My hope is that for America’s 250th anniversary, this will be more of a focus on what our next 250 years look like, rather than just a wonderful commemoration of the past quarter of a millennium.
