Can you explain why ATA strongly opposes this scheme and strongly supports an increase in motor fuel taxes?

This needs to be a coordinated Federal system. We need to go heavily into the 21st century in new technologies and look at all the options before us.

The Federal Highway Trust Fund moneys are not ever spent and never have been spent on anything other than transportation purposes.

Let's just index the gas and diesel tax and do some bonding.

We're wasting four times as much money as we're investing on an annual basis.

If we don't pay for it, we are going to waste a hell of a lot more money.

We need a comprehensive approach, which is more Federal investment.

You can't just price people off the roads and say: Hey, we solved congestion.

It just seems to be a partisan issue here in Washington, DC.

The States can't do it on their own. They are trying.

I have proposed something that is so de minimus that it is just embarrassing that we can't do it.

We are wasting nearly four times as much money as we are investing on an annual basis year after year after year.

I urge the Committee to take a more thorough look at what Congress can do to help alleviate the persistent issues.

The health and wellbeing of our veterans is at stake.

I urge the Committee to take up legislation to authorize VA work-study student positions in congressional offices.

I believe that requiring them in school buses is a common-sense solution.

We need to ensure that existing protections extend to drivers who carry our most precious cargo, school children.

A school bus is only as safe as the person controlling it.

Ensuring the safe transportation of passengers is a critical responsibility of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

Obviously, we are doing a lot better with the transportation of our precious kids on their way to and from school on schoolbuses, but it is not perfect.

In the first hearing, we heard testimony about highway fatalities--100 people dying every day in motor vehicle accidents.
