“I just came to Congress in this 106th Congress and had the fortune of serving on the Committee on Banking and Financial Services with Bruce Vento, as well as the Subcommittee on Housing and Community Opportunity. The thing I remember first about Bruce Vento was that deep voice. So when we went through the roll, they would say Vento, here or yes, and I would turn around and try to figure out who it was. Luckily on the Subcommittee on Housing and Community Opportunity, the room was much smaller, and so he sat right behind me. Many chances I got to say so and so and how are you doing and the like. All I can say is having only known him about 20 months or less, he was good at, as everyone said, instructing and teaching. Through the H.R. 10 financial modernization, I always looked to hear what he had to say as we went through our hearings. Through the housing situations, I agreed with him about the need for affordable housing.”
