Political Quotes

I am pleased the Senate has turned to the Housing and Economic Recovery Act, which in large part was the responsibility of three of my colleagues, Senator Dodd, Senator Reed from Rhode Island, and Senator Shelby, which will provide much needed relief to our country's homeowners and the communities they live in. Ohio has been at the center of this storm for a number of years, and after years of neglect from the Federal Government, I am pleased that we are finally about to act. Congress needs to help and it needs to act quickly. Ohio set a record for foreclosures last year, some 83,000 foreclosures. That is more than 1,000 a week. That is close to 200 a day. More precisely, every week about 1,500 families have lost their homes. The end is nowhere in sight. These families need our help now. They do not need political posturing on unrelated issues. We have seen too much of that. This fall, by some estimates, we will see the peak of the subprime mortgage resets. One research firm predicts half the subprime loans made in the fourth quarter of 2006 will fail. The people who were sold these loans, and the neighborhoods they live in, must be among our highest priorities.
