“I rise to support Mr. Flake's amendment because saving $18 million from defense is a great start; but I do, indeed, oppose the underlying Republican continuing resolution. This resolution threatens jobs, American innovation, and jeopardizes investments that will rebuild America. As a member of the Science, Space, and Technology Committee, I believe that innovation will lead our Nation and our economy forward. We all know that basic research and technology development create jobs and will help America to win the future. The Republicans have this thing backwards. They have proposed cutting $2.5 billion to fund the National Institutes of Health. This $2.5 billion to NIH funding will be devastating to the biomedical industry that serves as the backbone of Cleveland and so many other communities across the country. The innovative ways that scientists are pursuing solutions to human suffering with neuroimaging, genomics, and the development of novel treatments that arise from basic findings will improve life for all of us. Innovation will cut down on the costs of these illnesses, lost productivity in the workplace, and it will create important avenues for new investigations that will create new jobs, new ventures, and new industries. We must continue to make investments in America. Our future is in innovation and technology development, and these cuts are not something we can afford. The loss of funding also means the loss of jobs. Where are the jobs?”
