Mr. Speaker, I rise today in support of H.R. 5220, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Act of 2010, which will provide important resources and services to the people with intellectual disabilities. This bill will reauthorize the Special Olympics Sport and Empowerment Act of 2004, provide assistance to Best Buddies to support the expansion and development of mentoring programs, and establish the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Institutes for Sports and Social Impact. Special Olympics and the Best Buddies program would not be where they are today or mean so much to so many people without Eunice Kennedy Shriver. She dedicated her life to the goal of a fully inclusive and supportive society for people with intellectual disabilities. She knew that all too often people with intellectual disabilities are subject to social isolation because of their different abilities. This bill makes sure that children and adults can fully participate and engage in education, social activities, and community opportunities.
