“I rise today to say happy Black History Month and to remind all that Black history is American history. I honor Rosa Parks, an American hero, on her birthday. Rosa Parks' courage was not confined to a single act when she was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama, on that bus. Known as the mother of the modern civil rights movement, she was an advocate for justice and a public servant who devoted her life to the NAACP, strengthening our democracy, and serving 20 years as a congressional staffer. Since her death 20 years ago, I have saluted her and made Ohio the first State in the Nation to recognize December 1 as Rosa Parks Day. As America celebrates our 250th birthday, we must honor not only our Founding Fathers but also the mothers of our democracy, women like Rosa Parks. Mr. Speaker, I wish Rosa Parks a happy heavenly birthday. May she rest in peace.”
