“This is a very troubling issue for one simple reason: What if anybody were allowed to put in a garden and at the same time were prohibited from doing any weeding or watering or doing anything to make it produce--prevented from fundamental attention? I am wondering if they would enjoy the fruits of their labor when harvest time comes. They say history is the greatest blueprint to the future. Throughout history, all creation on this earth, in order to ensure its internal survival, it must have some kind of economic worth. Now, that sounds hard and cold, doesn't it? But it happens to be a very true fact. There are those who somehow choose to look at our natural resources, or a natural landscape, and put it over into the column called 'spiritual'--not logical, not economic. Our forests cannot survive the ages with that approach. Under that philosophy, what will survive longer than the forests is the pine bark beetle. Fires will continue to exist--hotter--taking from the soil what cannot be replaced by anything but old growth. So as we approach this problem, I ask for common sense.”
