I rise today to thank Mr. Hyde for his distinguished service in the House of Representatives and to support his work to bring accountability and transparency to the United Nations. Throughout his career, Mr. Hyde has been a promoter and a defender of conservative issues, including the rights of the unborn and the need for a strong national defense. While many of my colleagues are committed and dedicated to these issues, my friend from Illinois has truly led by example in how he has advocated for conservative policies and championed family values. He is well known for his consistency and tenacity in his beliefs, yet he is well-respected within the House by Members of both sides of the aisle. He has strongly disagreed with Members about issues that evoke emotional responses, yet he has maintained his dignity and gentlemanly conduct. Mr. Chairman. I would like to thank Mr. Hyde for his work to increase the credibility of the United Nations and to wish him well in his retirement. Unfortunately, I was committed to attend an event in my district, and I was unable to vote for the final passage of the Henry J. Hyde United Nations Reform Act of 2005.
