before us today is a bipartisan bill that will help promote security, education, and freedom for employees who have worked and saved all of their lives for a safe and secure retirement. Those of us on the Committee on Education and the Workforce have been engaged in pension reform issues for several years now, looking at ways to expand worker access to high-quality investment advice and encourage employers to sponsor retirement plans for their workers. As our committee began hearings to address the Enron collapse, we did so with a firm commitment to identify further reforms that will strengthen the retirement security of American workers. The Pension Security Act, based on President Bush's reform plan, sends a clear message that Congress is committed to addressing the Enron collapse by enacting new safeguards to restore worker confidence in the Nation's pension system. It accomplishes this goal in a number of ways: First of all, the Pension Security Act includes new flexibility for workers to diversify their portfolios and better information about their pensions.
