“In 1968, I believe it is, Congress passed a Civil Rights Act, and we saw still that there had been over a period of 40 years racial discrimination in America. In 1963, Congress passed the Equal Pay Act, and yet we know there was wage discrimination over a period of more than 40 years affecting women. This Paycheck Fairness Act is an important step in eliminating the gap that exists between the compensation of men and women. It is a travesty that in 2009 we even have to address this issue, but the fact of the matter is, the unfortunate reality is that a compensation gap has existed for decades and persists to this day. Women receive less compensation than their male counterparts do for the same work. This bill is going to close the legal loopholes that employers have exploited to avoid compensation discrimination lawsuits. It will treat gender discrimination on par with other types of discrimination. We are about to have an economic stimulus package.
