Prior to that, he served New York's 7th congressional district from 1999 to 2013. Crowley was known for his work on issues such as healthcare, education, and economic development. He held various leadership positions within the Democratic Party, including serving as the chair of the Democratic Caucus in the House. In 2018, he was defeated in a primary election by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, which marked a significant shift in the political landscape of the district.
