“I rise in support of the Lewis amendment and to thank the gentleman from California, Chairman Lewis, for offering this amendment and for his leadership and cooperation in working with the Members of Congress from New Jersey, Governor Christine Todd Whitman, and Commissioner of Health Lynn Fishman from New Jersey. This amendment will for the first time provide the needed funding for the Toms River cancer cluster study. The funding will allow the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry to begin to look at possible causes for the increased cancer rate around Toms River. We have a responsibility to the people of this area to find out what is causing these cases and this funding will help us find this out. I would like to thank Chairman Lewis of this subcommittee, most particularly for his leadership and his cooperation, and urge adoption of this amendment on behalf of all the citizens of New Jersey.”
