“I support this amendment which would improve protection for human health and the environment nationwide, and I would like to thank my colleague from North Carolina for her hard work on this important issue and for offering this amendment. The citizens and government of North Carolina recognize the seriousness of the risks posed by coal ash. They have experienced the devastation coal ash can cause, and that is why even Republicans in the State government have supported strengthening regulation of coal ash. Representative Adams speaks from personal experience that many of us have been spared, but we should not wait for more coal ash disasters to adopt strong, preventive measures. Mr. Chairman, I urge my colleagues to support the amendment and vote ``yes,'' but I do want to caution that, like my colleague, I will urge a ``no'' vote on final passage even if this amendment passes.”
