I wish to pay special commendation to my friend and my colleague, the gentleman from California (Mr. Thompson), for introducing this resolution. Although it may not seem it, 25 years have elapsed since the United States military forces fought in Vietnam. While not everyone may agree that the United States should have participated in the conflict, the matter is we did. More important, hundreds of thousands of patriotic Americans gave their lives or were wounded while serving this country. Still others remain unaccounted for. It is only fitting that we recognize their sacrifice on behalf of our great Nation. This resolution honors the service of the military members and civilians who served during the Vietnam era and also recognizes and honors the families who suffered during this conflict. The heroism and sacrifices made by these individuals deserve to be recognized, and this resolution takes that step.
