two employees of the Social Security Administration in my home State of New Jersey were recently convicted of selling Social Security cards to more than 20 illegal aliens. For their crimes, one defendant was sentenced to just 7 months in prison, the other received just 3 months. This is a classic case of the punishment not fitting the crime. While the illegal aliens paid only $100 for the Social Security cards, the cost to American taxpayers was far greater. That is why I recently introduced legislation which would increase the penalty for providing an illegal alien with a Social Security card. My bill would create a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years in prison. Mr. Speaker, it is time to stop illegal aliens from robbing the American people of both their jobs and their hard earned tax dollars. I urge my colleagues to join me in this effort.
