I know with Senator Cantwell's leadership with the work that she has done with oceans, and the Chairman's leadership here, I am hopeful we will be able to get something done.

The public is crying out for accountability.

Are there things you learned from that that will be helpful with this big influx for the TARP funds and the stimulus funds?

I think it has a positive effect going forward, but a deterrent effect.

I was a prosecutor for 8 years, ran an office of about 400 people, and one of the things that was most troubling to me in just the last few years was what happened to our U.S. Attorney'S Office in Minnesota.

It was really shocking to me to see how quickly that office deteriorated and what went on there.

I don't agree with everything that's in it and everything that came out, but, literally, we can't afford to wait any longer to get something passed.

So we have a situation where plants can have repeated salmonella outbreaks, or salmonella discoveries. They are not required to tell you.

And back to the salmonella issue, how much do you think this is going on in food processing plants and in different plants across the country where salmonella is found?

So you have to have this shipping, which obviously creates a much more hazardous possibility, before you can even find out.

On Monday, I sent a letter to President Obama urging him to nominate a new permanent FDA Commissioner as soon as possible.

I believe it is shameful that a death like this could happen in America.

I admire the hard work of our Health Department, but all of this happened because of a failure, the failure of our government to prevent unsafe food from entering the food chain.

There is a lot of concern of some of these potential antitrust violations with pharmaceutical companies.

We are very proud of that on this Committee, with the railroads...

I just get concerned with shrinking local resources... that things are going to be shoved out.

A major railroad that leases track to a short-line railroad can require the short line only to do business with that railroad...

I have found it very helpful. I know it is helpful for Mayo and these other groups that have done so well to be able to have that research.

I think you have to be very careful because you want--at the end of the day, we all want the patient to get the care that they need.
