I want to talk with my colleagues for a moment about the school-based child care block grant contained in the House Republican welfare bill. It has been subjected to vicious attacks by the White House and other defenders of the status quo, and I say defenders of government bureaucracy, of Federal bureaucracy. I appreciate this opportunity to take just a moment and, with my colleagues, tell the truth about the House Republican welfare bill. I believe for the last few weeks, the American people have been deceived. Some would say maybe more strongly they have been lied to. But the Democratic Party, some of those who preceded us here this evening, have distorted the facts and attempted to use children to promote the political agenda, and one by one they have paraded out on the House floor to tell the story, make the claims that House Republicans are taking food out of the mouths of children. I have to say that nothing could be further from the truth.
