Our long-term goal is to reach 1 million Americans serving each year within the next decade, and with the leadership and the help of this organization and our nation’s remarkable governors, we are going to get this done.

And I’m proud to say that in Maryland, we became the first state in the country that offers a paid-year service to our high school graduates because every young person in our state deserves a chance to serve.

So over this next year, I will ask us to lead in Service United, and to remember that in this time of political divisiveness and political vitriol-that it is, in fact, service that will save us-and I know that service is going to save us…

Service United is a bipartisan call to action for our nation’s governors to create and expand paid service programs that meet our most urgent community needs while helping young Americans build critical skills.

At a time of deep division, I firmly believe that service will save us.

I am honored to work with the new executive committee as chair, and I am confident that when we put our heads together we will show that government still works, bipartisan leaders still deliver, and service will save us.
