Now, Therefore, I, Dwight D. Eisenhower, President of the United States of America, do hereby designate Tuesday, October 12, 1954, as Columbus Day, and I invite all the people of our Nation to observe this anniversary with appropriate ceremonies.

We must not be either patronizing, resentful, or treat them as a stranger or enemy.
People must meet and understand other people, and so doing make it ever more difficult for governments, responding to false prides or even worse, personal ambitions, to sustain dictatorships.
