In order to maintain our global competiveness it is essential that we drastically reduce our federal spending.

The investment that this country and this Congress has in the metropolitan region of New Orleans is a wise investment.

I urge the Committee to recognize the importance of investing in Community Development Financial Institutions.

I urge my colleagues to fully fund Pell Grant awards at a maximum level of $5,550.

HR 1 would make hurtful cuts to priorities such as Community Development Block Grants, Pell grants and Head Start.

Make no mistake about it, this responsibility falls to us-- Republican and Democrat alike.

I wish Mr. Pascrell was here. We were glad that Mitch Daniels came back to Indiana to be our governor, because we have a balanced budget and we have jobs that are being created in Indiana.

I think the American economy is more resilient than this.

But do you really believe this budget--I mean, we have talked about it earlier... I think it is irresponsible.

But I think if we make that one of our priorities, because people have paid into that for years, making sure that is a priority...

Currently we do not prioritize debt, is that correct? Why can't we change that, why can't we focus on making sure that our current debt, our primary obligations be taken care of...
