I really hope that if we're going to be saying we care about children that we actually address it by policy and create legal pathways so that human traffickers no longer have business.

I also feel like it's a deplorable policy when being trafficked or smuggled seems to be the only way that people can come to seek asylum in this country.

I think we all agree that human smuggling and trafficking is terrible, especially when we're inflicting this pain, this trauma on children.

Words we use to address the threat to our Nation do matter. They hold power.

I've called on my colleagues and the administration to use our collective power and urge for a cease-fire.

I unequivocally condemn Hamas attacks on Israel and the escalating violence that has followed.

I agree that Iran represents a real threat to our national security, and I fully believe it's our responsibility...

Work permits, immigration reform, and the adequate visas so that people don't have to come here illegally, these are all solutions.

Generation after generation, our families have been coming to this country, crossing the ocean or the border.

This country would fall apart without immigrants. One day without immigrants, you don't eat.

No child should die in the water or be separated from their family, citizen or non-citizen.

We should not stand for this blatant power play, nor allow it to be used as leverage to threaten our country with a Republican government shutdown.

It is so disappointing to me to see some of my Republican colleagues talk about protecting women and children and then support cruel policies such as H.R. 2, the Child Deportation Act.

We have to make sure that these children that are no longer children are cared for.

What I would say is that if we are truly serious about addressing this crisis, folks, we have got to start talking about immigration reform.

If the border is open, which we continue to hear over and over and over again, then why is it that people are drowning in the Rio Grande?

This crisis was made by years of inaction from politicians on both sides of the aisle.

This body's job is to address the problems in our country, not to spew more hate.

It is not lost on me that before murdering 10 people at the supermarket last year, the shooter wrote, and I quote, 'We are experiencing an invasion on a level never seen before in history.'

Today's hearing should be shedding light on the pressing issues surrounding immigration policies, what is causing migration, and how do we make sure the children we talk about, the children that I actually know personally are cared for.

I sincerely hope we can look beyond the politics and work together to achieve comprehensive immigration reform and address the causes and the concerns we have around this opioid crisis.
