What has happened to the Jena 6 reminds us that we have not yet reached the ideal of equal justice for all in this country.
Barack Obama
The Public Record
Barack Obama served as the 44th President of the United States from January 20, 2009, to January 20, 2017. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously represented Illinois in the U.S. Senate from 2005 to 2008 and served in the Illinois State Senate from 1997 to 2004. Obama is known for his signature policies including the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, and his efforts in economic recovery following the 2008 financial crisis. His presidency was marked by significant legislative achievements and a focus on healthcare reform, climate change, and foreign policy initiatives such as the Iran nuclear deal.
I am concerned that the sentence in this case appears unusually long and was issued by the same judge whose previous ruling was overturned as clearly erroneous.
I don't want to give this President any excuse, or any opening for war.
By having the courage to challenge the skeptics in Washington and lead on the climate crisis facing our planet, Al Gore has advanced the cause of peace and richly deserves this reward.
I hope that the appeals court will consider all relevant factors, including the background of this troubling case, in determining what, if any, punishment is appropriate for this young man.
I once again call on the Department of Justice to fully investigate this case to see if the civil rights of all these young men have been violated by our criminal justice system.
